This print Santa Muerte (Electric Messiah Version) started as an original painting (left) that I later photographed. With photoshop I altered the original color spectrum and ended up with a psychedelic, vibrant version that I like as much as the original. Santa Muerte, or the Holy Death, has many followers, mostly in Mexico but not exclusively. She is beloved by her followers because she is not bound by the dogma that traditional Catholic saints obey. Death is neutral, she comes for all, good, bad, ugly, beautiful, and if you didn’t know, sorry to break it to you,…death is real. Her disciples worship her by making alters with gifts of rum, food and cigars, they pray to her and ask her for blessings or favors. Santa Muerte, being neutral, considers all requests individually, even if the persons wish might be frowned upon by more traditional religions. While I am not a believer, this image of the Santa is comforting to me and makes death seem less frightening.
